Hellhole - 1
- HELLHOLE 1 - An acrylic painting on a 16 x 20 size canvas board. It appears on the cover of, "Asimov's Science Fiction Adventure Magazine, Fall, 1979".
This picture is based on the story, "Hellhole" by David Gerrold. Sadly, this painting was lost while in possession of the publisher, and when that happens the contract requires the publisher to pay me for the loss, an amount equal to what I was paid for printing rights. Some time later I painted a second version of this scene for an art collector, but I did it on a smaller canvas size, 12 x 16.
I worked an average of five hours a day and don't remember ever working weekends. But there is this fact about my life as an illustrator, and it is probably true of other artists and writers; the creative work I did, the thinking part, was not limited to the time I sat at the drawing board. I spent time sitting at a table during a wedding reception thinking about the approach I was going to take with the Hodgson story I was illustrating. I spent time watching a movie on TV but not really paying attention to the movie, I was thinking instead, about the paperback cover I was working on. And, I spent time sitting on a toilet seat at a casino in Atlantic City thinking about the kind of drawings I should do for a book I was about to illustrate. And there were entire nights spent thinking about a project, instead of sleeping.
I did a lot of such "thinking work" before I went upstairs to my studio to draw or paint. Saying that I worked an average of 5 hours a day is misleading, those were the "physical work" hours only, they do not include the hard "thinking" hours. Actually, I don't believe that any artist, or writer, or any creative person, ever limits their work to a fixed time schedule of any kind. We are at "work" ALL the time.
